Hopeful Future
Cynthia and her siblings endured years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Cynthia could not take it anymore and decided to take on the responsibility of caring for her three younger siblings and took them out of the abusive home. She is now responsible for making sure her two sisters and her brother are safe. She rented a house for them to live in and she needed help with rent and monthly utilities, as well as schooling cost. She and her siblings are very grateful for our help because they are now safe and no longer suffering from the daily abuse. They are thriving in school and are looking forward to what the future may hold.
Hope of Life
We helped with medical equipment for the new St. Luke’s Hospital that opened in February 2011. Thanks to Abused Women’s Fund’s donation, this maternal/children’s hospital serves all of the poor citizen’s of Guatemala especially in the departments of Zacapa, Chiquimula, Jutiapa and the surrounding regions. The state medical department underserves these regions and child and mother mortality is the highest here. The hospital also has a nutrition center because this region has the highest malnutrition rates and child mortality in Guatemala due to being the “dry corridor” of Guatemala. Clothing and hygiene products were also donated. We’ve partnered with hope of life to provide with donations that serve them to continue their beautiful work.
Robotics Dream come TrueAs single moms we feel obligated to prioritize the basic needs for our children, so many opportunities that can enrich our children’s lives may seem unreachable. Sometimes even just a few hundred dollars stand in the way of making our children’s dreams a reality. Jennifer is a single mother of three adolescent children. One of her children qualified for a state robotics competition in Dallas, Texas, and they did not have the funds to go. All of her children are very gifted, and they had never had the opportunity to travel. AWF gave a one time grant to help the family go to the competition.
Ray of LightSometimes you feel so hopeless and alone you feel you can’t do anything but stay in whatever violent situation you are in, Jennifer was a young lady that was in need of financial support to help her and her young baby get out of an abusive situation. She was living with an abusive man and felt her and her child were no longer safe. We are glad we could help her start a new life and get back on her feet. Together we are stronger, don’t be afraid to speak up, you are not alone.
